Calmly unaware of being such a standout in the animal kingdom, painted turtles are a huge success story. The have routinely escaped or been saved and released into new environments. I saw this creature in an inner city pond on a sunny day, smiling, or so I imagined. For all I know it could have been plotting world domination. Regardless, I loved the patterns and colors of this confident world traveler and was determined to paint a worthy portrait.

Turtles are a symbol to many of longevity, health and good luck.
