In rural Hawaii abundant harvests are shared with family and friends. These bags of passion fruit were a much appreciated gift and soon became lilikoi butter, the subject of another painting in the series.

The best days on an ocean crossing are gentle seas under a cumulous sky. The mesmerizing patterns of reflections in motion filled the day with peaceful meditation while waiting to make landfall. 

An arid desert landscape, expansive, clear blue sky and humble house on the horizon convey a deep sense of solitude in a harsh environment.

In the settlement of Kalaupapa, after visiting hours, the nights of music and song at Auntie Gertie's are legendary. The grave stones of friends lost to Hansen's disease stand in the yard. 

The original facade of St Philomena Church built by Father Damien with minimal hand tools and not one inking he would become the saint of leprosy and Hawaii.. He was canonized in 2009. When the church was rebuilt the original front door was preserved as a separate entrance.

One of the lovely, rustic summerhouses overlooking Mohonk Lake in New York. I imagine when humans aren't around that the animals enjoy them too.

The marvelous and always curious Atticus lives at the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in High Falls, New York. His table is both a viewing stage and a tactical high ground, although he is lovingly willing to suspend head butts for a handful of hay. 

Magnificent black bears wander through my yard during summer in the Catskills. Their presense is felt and admired. I nicknamed a male bear Seymour, only to find out he was a she. She's now Jane Seymour and this is her portrait.  

A cattle co-op on Molokai allows cattle to graze on the side of a mountain. Once a year the cattle are rounded up, sorted and treated. Some are culled to provide food for Hawaiian families. 

A local favorite, not too big, but just right. Easy to swim if the surf isn't going off. Mile 29 on the east end of Molokai.

A traditional Hawaiian gift or offering wrapped in ti leaves, a pu'olo, used to present gifts, food, or items of respect as a gesture of aloha, gratitude, or a spiritual offering,a ho'okupu. The ti leaf symbolizes protection, blessing, and honor.

Working fishing boats on their moorings awaiting fishermen and nets. The wharf is the lifeline for goods arriving on barges. The ferry is no more, but was included for the fond memories it gave. 

West End Molokai's windy beach where classic lava cliffs stand as senntinels overlooking the cobalt blue Pacific Ocean. 

Near Kaunakakai familiar coconut palms line the beach in this much loved gathering place.

Saint Damien of Molokai, imagined in prayer under the shady canopy of a large kamani tree in Kalaupapa. Salt washed kukui trees in the background give the area an ethereal glow. I have often felt a strong reverence for nature and the challenges humanity faces while passing through this place on the way to Kalaupapa.  

Deep in Halawa Valley, Mo'oula Falls are home of a mo'o, a legendary creature both great and fierce. Local lore claims that dropping a ti leaf in the sacred pool allows visitors a peaceful visit, if the leaf floats. I haven't heard what happens if it sinks.

A contemporary experiment in color blocking and transparency with rodeo horses.

Siloama was the first church built in Kalawao on the Kalaupapa pennisula, the much loved landmark has been refurbished many times. The painting is part of the series 90 Paintings in 90 Days, of Molokai subjects.

Ancient fishponds grace the shoreline of Molokai. The remnants of many that are no longer cultivated, but still show their outlines above and below the surface.

A favorite banyan tree at the former Pau Hana Inn in Kaunakakai, Molokai. Places change hands, but fortunately this tree still spreads it's shade over a lovely beachside courtyard.

Color blocked messy table. I took a photo of while visiting someone's house and vowed my table would never look like that, unfortunately it often does. One of my first oil paintings that somehow survived my nomad life.

Intended to capture the feeling of being on the water without a care in the world on a bright cloudless day. We skimmed across the surface of Lake Mead, motor humming, looking for adventure.
