One fabulous trick of this goofy fish is self-inflating when they feel threatened. By rapidly gulping water into their elastic stomachs, they can turn into a spikey ball, although it’s physically exhausting for them and it ruins their chance to escape. They can also bite with digit removing vigor so it’s best to admire them from a distance. I sketched one in deflated mode after a snorkel trip in Hawaii and imagined it in full defensive mode for the painting. It’s wise to avoid eating them because they pack tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin that’s about 1200 times more toxic to us than cyanide with no known antidote. For spikey, poisonous biters they are darned cute though.
