Saudade

The painting evokes a sense of longing and joy, melancholy and wonder. The central, glowing red hearts speak to love and connection, while the surrounding mist and cooler colors introduce elements of uncertainty, memory, and perhaps a touch of sorrow for memories lost.

Peaceable Catskills

Peaceable Catskills represents a regional adaptation of Edward Hicks’s iconic subject matter translating the concept of universal peace into a specific, idyllic vision of the American wilderness. The inclusion of the young girl as the central, calming force, surrounded by predators that have foresworn their instincts creates a nostalgic vision of coexistence.

The Elusive Seven Sisters

East end Molokai from the vantage point of a tropical bird. The composition is defined by strong horizontal layers, transitioning from the deep cerulean open ocean to the turquoise sanctuary of the lagoon behind the barrier reef. The skeletal remains of the historic Kamalo Wharf anchor the viewer’s eye, a reminder of the island’s agricultural past.

Approaching Tutulia

Approaching Tutuila moves beyond traditional maritime portraiture. Instead of focusing on the vessel or the mechanics of sailing the artist, Catherine Buchanan, focuses on the experience of the voyager. The viewer is positioned low on the water, transforming the sea from a mere surface into a living, breathing pattern of light.

New Mexico Desert

An arid desert landscape under an immense, clear blue sky. A plain, solitary house melds with the horizon. foreground and middle, including rounded sagebrush, dry golden grasses, and scattered tumbleweeds rendered in earthy tones of ochre, tan, and dusty green. The perspective is wide and open, emphasizing a sense of profound solitude and the massive scale of the sky relative to the small human dwelling.

A favorite walk along the Hudson River where train tracks run on a narrow isthmus, allowing river views on both sides. During winter ice floes creak and moan. … Kingston Riverbend Twilight

Mo’oula Falls

Halawa Valley ends in a remote canyon on Moloka’i on the shore of a deep pool with a series of waterfalls cascading down the mountain from Kamakou Preserve. The roar of the falls, cooling water and sweltering jungle offer a presence that words fail. I paint in the studio from photographs that I take while … Mo’oula Falls

Moloka’i Roundup

Raising cattle has become a tradition in Hawaii. I was interested in learning about the humane way this Moloka’i co-op treated their livestock as a guest for the annual roundup. Paniolos on horseback herded the cattle into a funnel of fences from the free range mountain they live on. The thunder of hooves thrilled the … Moloka’i Roundup
